In continuing with the trend of a very busy off-season, the Philadelphia Eagles have released former pro bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes.

The former Cincinnati Bengal and Buffalo Bill, Spikes came to the Eagles with extreme enthusiasm of being part of a winning franchise. He was the lone elder statesman of the linebacking crew last off-season when the Eagles cut Jeremiah Trotter. The emergence of Stewart Bradley at MLB certainly played a key part in the long term decision to part ways with the 31-year old player. In all likelihood, Bradley will take the MLB role with Omar Gaither switching back to the weak side.

In his only season in midnight green, Spikes was good…but never great. In 14 games, he recorded 86 tackles and had 1 sack. Age has caught up to the linebacker, as his glory days (2001-2004) seem to be at an end. The one time pro-bowler wasn’t expected to be a savior for the Eagles, but in the long run this will most likely turn out to be a good move for the organization.

Since late February, the Eagles have been very busy revamping their team, primarily on defense. On the 28th, the team agreed to a 1-year deal with safety J.R. Reed (who hopefully will not be returning punts…) and tendered cornerback Joselio Hanson. On the 29th, the Birds cut ties with 2004 free agent bust, d-end Jevon Kearse. Of course, on the first day of free agency the Eagles also made a huge splash by signing the best defensive free agent on the market; corner Asante Samuel.

My boyfriend spends too much time on websites like this. I hate all those sources! They must be abandoned!
