To help assess the top teams in the Eastern Conference we bring back Mid-west correspondent Jeff Young.

Dave: C The Penguins made a clear move to win now and didn’t think about the future. They traded away prospect Angelo Esposito, Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, AND a first round pick all for Marian Hossa who got injured in his first game as a Penguin. I think the Pens were stupid to make the trade in the first place but the injury was just salt in the wound. The trade will make absolutely zero sense unless Hossa re-signs with the Pens or they win the Stanley Cup this year. (I wouldn’t bet on the latter.)

Jeff: A Look at what this team was able to do despite losing Crosby AND Fleury to high ankle sprains. It is almost scary to think about what they can do from now with the two in the lineup AND Marian Hossa. Only reason I didn’t give them an A+ is because they gave up a lot for him. It should work out in the end, in which could get them to the Cup Finals. Great addition on defense also, by picking up Hal Gill. Gill, Hossa, and Dupuis are great penalty killers, which has dogged this team all year.

Dave: F Two things went wrong at the trade deadline for the Habs. They didn’t get Marian Hossa as many thought they would and they traded away their number one goalie for a second round draft pick. I’m still scratching my head on that last one.

Jeff:B This team was red hot towards the trade deadline, but they left everyone scratching their heads by trading their number one goaltender Huet. That really did not make much sense, but if you look at what this youngster Price has been able to accomplish, all should be fine leading to the playoffs.

Dave: C The Hurricanes didn’t do much in a division that is very close. The Washington Capitals really took advantage of that and are only three points back of Carolina. Look out ‘Canes.

Jeff: B This team was already pretty good, so there really wasnt much to do. They did trade Stillman and Commodore to the Senators for Eaves and Corvo, but to me that seems like a pretty even trade. They should be fine going into the playoffs, but they may have to start worrying with the surging Capitals hot on their trail.

Dave: B They added Bryce Salvador and they really didn’t need to make any adjustments. With a healthy Martin Brodeur in net the Devils will always be scary good.

Jeff: C The Devils acquired hard hitting defenseman Bryce Salvador from the Blues, but come on. Did they not see what the Pens did??? This team is good, maybe even great with Brodeur in net, but their lack of urgency may cost them the Division crown at the end of the season.

Dave: C Yes, they brought in Martin Lapointe, but with the way they’ve been struggling lately the Senators really should have lit a fire under the proverbial ass of their entire team and made a bigger move to motivate the team.

Jeff: B The Sens were able to acquire Lapointe from Chicago and the two from Carolina that I just mentioned. Like Carolina, I am not sure if they really needed to do much, but they are struggling, so their moves are going to be questioned. Changing head coaches (again) and not moving Emery could eventually hurt this team coming down the stretch.

Dave: B The Bruins didn’t make a splash of any kind at the trade deadline and quite honestly they didn’t need to. They’ve been getting better as the season goes on and Patrice Bergeron is looking to make a return soon. He hasn’t played since the Randy Jones hit.

Jeff: D The Bruins made a few moves, but none of them noteworthy. The Bruins did not help their team at all for the playoff run (case and point…look at last night’s game against the Capitals).

Dave: C The Rangers are another team like the Senators that have struggles lately and needed to do something to wake the players up. They did nothing to improve their team right now but did get a few young players. Does this mean the Rangers will actually develop talent instead of just overpaying veterans?

Jeff: C- It’s a typical Rangers team. They try to buy their talent (and wins) and never works. They were pretty quiet at the deadline which makes me wonder why. They are in the hunt and, as of now, in the playoffs, yet they do not make any moves to try and improve their team in a very tough division.

Dave: C  Don’t get me wrong, I like the trade for Vinny Prospal, but he isn’t enough. The Flyers weren’t just one puzzle piece away. They should have made a bigger effort for a scoring forward and an experienced, yet not ancient (yeah I’m talking to you Jaroslav Modry) defenseman. Brian Campbell would have been nice.

Jeff: B I will applaud their move to get rid of Vandermeer, and their ability to get Vinny Prospal and Modry, but is that seriously all? Key players on this team are injured, and they just got done with a losing streak of 10 games. This team needs to get healthy, and maybe they can squeak into the playoffs. Oh, and Danny Briere needs to step up his game like Malkin has with the Pens. Earn your money Danny boy.

Dave: B Brian Campbell didn’t like what the Sabres were offering him so they let him go and got a reasonable amount in return. Steve Bernier made an immediate impact on the team. Buffalo doesn’t really have many bargaining chips left to play with so they did okay for themselves.

Jeff: D Let’s not kid ourselves. This team was a seller at the deadline. Trading Campbell, or not being able to sign him long term, is as stupid of a move you can make. Look for the Sabres to fall out of contention real soon.

Dave: A+ Wow! What a steal for the Caps. They get a great goalie in Cristobal Huet (he didn’t change the spelling of his name only the pronunciation), for only a second round pick and an aging Russian in Sergei Federov who could regain his form playing alongside countryman Alex Ovechkin. The Caps definitely want to win that awful Southeast division.

Jeff: A- LOOK OUT FOR THE CAPITALS! I am saying it now! They were able to acquire, most notably Huet and Federov at the deadline. This team looks very good and I really see them taking the Southeast Division from Carolina.
