After 17 weeks, the regular season in the NFL has come to an end. Eight teams will move on to play for the Lombardi Trophy, while 24 others scratch their heads on how they can be right back in the mix next year. All year, myself and Dave have picked each and every game and here’s how it turned out…

FINAL SEASON STANDINGS:

So, I came out on top this season in the NFL picks by 9 games, including 10 upset picks correctly chosen. But its playoff time now. Dave however, has the chance for redemption when we pick the playoff games. Here’s the Wild Card Weekend Playoff Schedule:

When you look back at the 2007 Philadelphia Eagles you see one blaring aspect that hung around all season long, for every game and almost every snap : inconsistency. They hung 56 points on Detroit and scored 3 points the next week at New York. Against New Orleans, our receivers created space and made something out of nothing with quick passes, while verse Chicago or one of many other games the wide outs were invisible, bottled up by mediocre secondaries. Akers was not the field goal kicking machine we were used to. Dawkins, although rattled with injuries for most of the year, looked his age in many of the games, very seldomnly making a big play.

eagles.jpg

The corners, Brown and Sheppard, while each making their fare share of big plays, looked like rookies when getting thrashed by Dallas (the first time) and other games. Lito Sheppard especially looked inconsistent and out of place this year. Against Dallas he shut down Terrell Owens for the entire game. He had an interception and ran step by step with Owens, holding him to 2 catches and 0 touchdowns. But this is the kind of thing that happened all year: a good game, then a bad game. A great drive, then numerous 3 and outs. A good showing by the d-line getting pressure, followed by a 0 sack game the next week out. This team defined the word inconsistent this year and it’s truly a shame. There were many bright spots on this team: the big steps forward taken by Omar Gathier towards the end of the year, establishing himself as the true big time replacement for Trotter in the middle. Chris Gocong looked better and better as each week passed. Winston Justice….well, just kidding. Kevin Curtis, a career number 3 receiver, went over 1,000 yards and provided a constant headache for defenses. While an entire article could be written about the glue that kept the team together, Brian Westbrook (and I do plan to write one soon), the most promising thing about this season is the recent play of Donovan McNabb. Never in his 9 years in Philadelphia has the face of this franchise faced such constant criticism for his play. Some of it was and is very understandable, he had games where he just couldn’t make a throw; making fans pray for a trade in the off season. But the last 2 to 3 weeks saw a great change. Donovan got his legs back, his knee surgery truly becoming a problem of the past and with no or little effect on his play. He had pocket mobility and hit receivers on the numbers. He didn’t put up blistering numbers, but the team won, and he looked very efficient doing what we’re used to seeing him do. Of course, there’s still the season finale, at the Linc against Buffalo in a few days. We’ll see if this team, a completely unpredictable group of 53 men, can rally to finish 8-8. It would be quite the accomplishment for such a let down of a season. I’ll look back and evaluate team MVPs of the year, LVP’s of the year, and talk about possible offseason moves after the game on Sunday.

Stupid title for what is essentially hockey notes but I couldn’t think of anything clever and original. Comment on the article to submit your own title. A couple things interested me in the NHL this week. First of all the NHL handed out its record longest suspension and it wasn’t even a member of the Flyers.

NY Islander Chris Simon was suspended 30 games following the announcement of his sabbatical from hockey. Simon has been only marginally involved in the actual playing of the sport as he has attempted to evolve like a caveman first experimenting with his stick as a weapon then eventually trying to use it to push that small black piece of rubber into that white mesh thing outlined in shiny red metal.

The latest of Chris Simon’s ruthless attempts to ruin the sport came on the 15th when he stepped on the leg of Penguin Jarkko Ruutu. His 30 game suspension beats his personal record of 25 and set a new precedent for the NHL. Simon is a goon who deserves no place in the sport of hockey, let alone the NHL. It is players like him that ruin the fine sport’s reputation and give critics a reason to speak.

I actually had a run in myself with Simon last season.

Pre-game stakes at the Wachovia Center get very crowded around the Flyers’ end so I made my way over to the Islanders end to see if I could get anyone to respond to me. Jason Blake looked at me and smiled when I whole heartedly congratulated him on laying Sidney Crosby out in a game the night before. When Simon rounded the blue line however, he was not as friendly. I was merely quizzing him on his current stats (5 goals 15 assists as of the game on March 24) and he felt the need to shoot a puck over the boards in my direction above the Islanders’ bench. He missed me, much like he missed the net all season.  Had he hit me however, I would be a millionaire writing my blog from my iPhone while I drive my Maserati down Pattison Ave.  I was escorted away from the Islanders skate but I even saw Blake chuckle as Simon reacted to my harmless question.

Secondly, I am a bit confused on the latest Flyers move. On the same day that the Flyers lost to the Phoenix Coyotes they traded Ben Eager to the Chicago Blackhawks for former Flyer and Phantom Jim Vandermeer. Vandermeer was traded to Chicago in 2004 for Alex Zhamnov. He has emerged into a physical defenseman  known for his tough play rather than his scoring ability. He has nine points in his 26 games for the Blackhawks so far this season.

Ben Eager was scoreless so far this season. He is a mediocre fighter at best. I understand trading him, but why for Vandermeer? We have plenty of defenseman who can move the puck and are doing great so far this season. Alexandre Picard is even getting some time with the big boys after starting the season with the Flyers and he looks good as well. Rather than getting another defenseman I think GM Paul Holmgren could have helped the team more by getting fourth can either fight or move the puck.  But hey, who am I? Holmgren hasn’t made a bad move yet so for now…I’ll trust him.

Geoff Jenkins To Sign With Phils’ December 20, 2007

So I’ve been checking mlbtraderumors.com since the Phils got eliminated from the playoffs and finally I have something substantial to report. Sources have told ESPN that the Phillies have agreed to a contract with former Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Geoff Jenkins. The deal is reportedly worth $13 million over 2 years. Jenkins gives the Phils’ another left handed option at the plate.

After Pat Gillick played his broken record for the millionth time this off-season, we were led to believe the Phillies were only focusing on pitching. The acquisition of Jenkins gives the Phils’ some much needed experience in the outfield as he will join Pat Burrell, Shane Victorino, and Jayson Werth in the platoon. The Fightins’ lost Aaron Rowand to the San Francisco Giants and Michael Bourn to the Houston Astros via free agency and trade respectively.  Jenkins hit .255 last season for the Brewers with 21 home runs.

This is a great move for the Phils who were looking slim in an outfield cast that made most Phillies fans skeptical about opening day 2008. If the Phils add a third baseman who isn’t named Wes Helms (in fact if they could trade him to Florida it would be awesome) and another big arm in the starting rotation (preferably one that wasn’t mentioned in the Mitchell Report) they should be able to advance further in the playoffs.

Look for more news form the Phils’ soon. It looks like they are very close to a deal with former Detroit Tigers pitcher Chad Durbin.  He went 8-7 with a 4.72 ERA last year with Detroit. Extensive research (a wikipedia search) shows he is NOT related to current Phils’ prospect J.D. Durbin (let’s hope not).

It’s been a college football season for the ages without a doubt. It all started way back when, with Appalachian State (a division II, or subdivision opponent) shocking Michigan in the Big House. The season rolled on and each and every week held upset after upset. Number 1 and 2 teams lost like it was going out of style, and it seemed like just about every team to be ranked at number 2 lost that very next week. Anybody who thinks they have a grasp on how these games are going to play out, is out of their mind. This season proved that college football experts are guessing on these games just like the rest of us.

For The ADD Show Bowl show down, we bring in resident college football expert and friend to the show, Jeff Young: student at the Ohio State University. Here’s Jeff and Aaron’s breakdown on the games from Dec. 20 until Dec. 31. The big time games will be posted at a later date.

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl - 12/20 ESPN

utah.gif     vs.     navy.gif

Jeff  navy.gifNavy’s Triple Option threat is too much for Utah to handle. Navy wins easily. 34-13

Aaron navy.gif  Navy has the best running attack in the country. Their ability to rush the ball is too much, even for the Utes who have won 6 bowl games in a row. Navy wins. 38-21

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl - 12/21 ESPN2

florida-atlantic.jpg     vs.     memphis.gif

Jeff  memphis.gifFAU’s football program started 6 years ago. Memphis has won 5 of their last 6. I see that continuing. 24-10

Aaron memphis.gifThese teams have virtually identical numbers on each side of the ball, while not a marquee match-up, this game should be pretty close and entertaining. Memphis eeks it out. 27-24.

Papajohns.com Bowl - 12/22 ESPN2

southern_miss.gif     vs.     cincinnati.gif

Jeff  cincinnati.gifThe ‘Nati looks like a solid surprise team who gave West Virginia all they could handle. 37-24

Aaron cincinnati.gif Cincinnati has played their toughest games with their best efforts this year, this should be somewhat of a lock win for the Bearcats. 35-14

New Mexico Bowl - 12/22 ESPN

nevada.gif     vs.     new_mexico.gif

Jeff  new_mexico.gifCan anyone say home game? 28-20

Aaron nevada.gif Nevada has averaged over 500 yards of offense per game and close to 37 points per game. They hung around with Hawaii too. 31-17

Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl - 12/22 ESPN

ucla-logo.jpg     vs.     byucolorlogo.jpg

Jeff  byucolorlogo.jpg Look for BYU to take advantage of a struggling UCLA program without a head coach. 17-7

Aaron  byucolorlogo.jpg The Bruins lost to Notre Dame this year. Yikes. 21-10

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl - 12/23 ESPN

boise-state.jpg     vs.     east_carolina.gif

Jeff  boise-state.jpg Ian Johnson. ‘Nuff said. 28-10

Aaron  boise-state.jpg Don’t expect to see Coach Petersen to stay around Boise St. much longer, he’s a coach that made a nothing program into something special. 41-14

Motor City Bowl - 12/26 ESPN

purdue.gif     vs.     central.gif

Jeff  central.gif Another intriguing matchup. Central Michigan is basically playing a home game. I see them pleasing the home crowd in a close one. 24-20

Aaron central.gif Central Michigan is the class of the MAC this year and has been for a few years now, Purdue showed nothing to be excited about. 34-24

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl - 12/27 ESPN

arizona_state.gif     vs.     texas.gif

Jeff  arizona_state.gif Colt McCoy is overrated. Plus, Limas Sweed is out for the season. Arizona State easily handles the Longhorns. 41-17

Aaron arizona_state.gif Even with a 9-3 mark, Texas has had a down year, plus with injuries and inconsistency with McCoy (18 INT’s), Arizona State should win this one. 41-24

Champs Sports Bowl - 12/28 ESPN

bc.gif     vs.     michigan_state.gif

Jeff  bc.gif Matt Ryan’s last collegiate game should be big against an inconsistent Spartan defense. 38-16

Aaron  bc.gif My big 10 bias can’t even help the Spartans here, they’re just not a good enough team to match up against BC. Big day for Matt Ryan. 30-10

Texas Bowl - 12/28 NFL Network

tcu_athletic_greyfrog268.jpg     vs.     houston.gif

Jeff  houston.gifOnce again, another team playing in their backyard. Houston in a close one. 21-17

Aaron  tcu_athletic_greyfrog268.jpg Houston’s offense is potent but their defense has a lot of wholes, and TCU could be able to pile on the yards via the running game. 31-28

Emerald Bowl - 12/28 ESPN

maryland.gif     vs.     oregon_state.gif

Jeff  maryland.gif The Terps have been inconsistent this year, but I see Head Coach Ralph Friedgen rallying his team for a close win over the Beavers. 24-17

Aaron  oregon_state.gif These two teams match up so closely when you look at the numbers, but give the Beavers the edge on the ground for sure, which will be the deciding factor. 17-13

Meineke Car Care Bowl - 12/29 ESPN

connecticut.gif     vs.     wbb_2006logo_wfu.jpg

Jeff  wbb_2006logo_wfu.jpgUConn won two games this year by bad judgment calls by the officials. I can’t see the officials helping them for a third. 28-17

Aaron wbb_2006logo_wfu.jpgOnce UConn got into the top 15 with a weak schedule, they showed why the Huskies are known for basketball, not football. Quite the weak finish, and a good opponent. Blowout. 44-7

AutoZone Liberty Bowl - 12/29 ESPN

central_florida.gif     vs.     mississippi_state.gif

Jeff  central_florida.gif Sylvester Croom was a great story this year and has done a great job this year with the Bulldogs, but Kevin Smith, the leading rusher in D-1A football this year, should steal the show. 27-20

Aaron central_florida.gif I always find it really difficult to pick against college teams in Florida, and with Kevin Smith running all over the field, the Knights have a great shot. 28-21

Valero Alamo Bowl - 12/29 ESPN

psu.jpg     vs.     texas_am.gif

Jeff  texas_am.gif Anthony “Smelly†Morelli should be easily handled by a stout Aggie defense. 31-14

Aaron  psu.jpg Penn State didn’t win their big games this year and Morelli is going to graduate without beating OSU or Michigan. But this defense is just nasty. Maybe Morelli ends on a good note. 24-20

PetroSun Independence Bowl - 12/30 ESPN

alabama.gif     vs.     du_colorado_logo.jpg

Jeff  alabama.gif Can the $4 million man, Nick Saban, turn the season around for a mediocre team that looks good one week (beating Tennessee 41-17) and horrible the next (losing to Louisiana-Monroe at home 21-14). I see this “tragedy†turning to a celebration. 24-7

Aaron  du_colorado_logo.jpg The Colorado football program was in shambles just a few years ago and they’ve made quite the turn around. Plus, Nick Saban is a joke. 38-31

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl - 12/31 ESPN

california.gif     vs.     air_force.gif

Jeff  california.gif Come on, Cal ended the season 6-6 with national title hopes in the preseason? Right…and Michigan lost to D1-AA Appalachian State. Oh wait… That DID happen. Come on Nate Longshore, prove me wrong. 28-10

Aaron  california.gif What a long, hard season for Nate Longshore and Cal. Ranked as high as 2, they stumbled into mediocrity. But I’ll always take them over a service academy football team, the difference in shear talent is remarkable.

Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl - 12/31 ESPN2

georgia_tech.gif     vs.     du_fresnostate_logo-tn.jpg

Jeff  georgia_tech.gif I’m not sure why, but I just feel that Tech will rally after the firing of Chan Gailey. Look for Tech to squeak by. 35-34

Aaron  du_fresnostate_logo-tn.jpg These teams are virtually identical in everything but their record (Bulldogs with 1 more win). Should be a close game, but Georgia Tech lost their coach, and they’ll lose this game. 37-31

Brut Sun Bowl - 12/31 CBS

usfbulls_newlogo.gif     vs.     oregon.gif

Jeff  usfbulls_newlogo.gif No one meant more to their team’s success than Dennis Dixon. Who is his replacement? Ryan Leaf’s brother? 28-13

Aaron  usfbulls_newlogo.gif I’m still unsure as to why Dixon didn’t nominated for the Heisman. You can see when he went out how valuable he really was. Oregon is on a free fall. 38-13

Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl - 12/31 ESPN

florida_state.gif     vs.     kentucky.gif

Jeff kentucky.gif  Andre Woodson is so deadly. 24-14

Aaron  kentucky.gif  A lot of people are projecting Woodson to be the first QB drafted next spring. Also let’s not forget the mammoth win against LSU this team had. Bowden hasn’t had his team ready to play for a few years now, and they look like they’re going to get rolled in this one. 49-21

Insight Bowl - 12/31 NFL Network

indiana_university.gifvs. okstatelogo.jpg

Jeff  okstatelogo.jpg Indiana is probably the best feel-good story of the year after Terry Hoeppner’s untimely death in the offseason. Indiana will “Play 13†but I think the Cowboys win on a last second field goal. 24-21

Aaron okstatelogo.jpg Indiana kept with the gameplan after a tragedy to begin the season. But OK St. is a balanced, good football team….I’M A MAN! I’M 40! Gotta love it. 28-14

Chick-fil-A Bowl - 12/31 ESPN

clemson.gif     vs.     auburn.gif

Jeff  clemson.gif This should be a defensive battle with whoever turns the ball losing the game. 13-6

Aaron clemson.gif Somewhat disappointing seasons for each program, but they play each other a lot, they don’t like each other, and they’ll be fired up to win. Each team is led by their strong defense. 20-7

The Bowl games from Jan 1-Jan 7 will be posted closer to the actual game dates. Enjoy the bowl season!

Being at last night’s blow out out game where the Flyers handed the Penguins their third loss in three meetings this year was quite a treat. It was the best $27 I’ve ever spent. The hockey I remember going to as a young kid in the mid ’90s was back. The Broad Street Bullies returned last night to manhandle the Pens and pretty boy Sidney Crosby. Crosby, of course, is public enemy number 1 in Philadelphia as it seems like every game he gives us more reason to hate him. Last night’s prominent reason was the tripping of Marty Biron behind the Flyers’ net in the third stanza. Sidney and Co. beat the Flyers not once, not twice, but EIGHT times last year. Yet last night all the way from row 6 in section 207A I could see coach Michel Therrien share a box of Kleenex with Sidney Crosby as they were both crying about their misfortune.

The Penguins committed 23 penalties for 98 minutes, giving the Flyers 13 power play opportunities (they capitalized on four). It only took 20 seconds to set the tone when Flyers’ captain Jason Smith dropped the gloves with Pittsburgh’s Ryan Malone. The pace continued when the Flyers weren’t putting the puck in the net. Both Joffery Lupul and R.J. Umberger notched hat tricks. Lupul was the first Flyer since Eric Lindros to score 6 points in a game. The third period got ugly when there were two brawls where all the skaters on the ice were involved. Late in the third Georges Laraque, the Pens’ resident tough guy broke his stick cross checking Lasse Kukkonen away from the play. The Flyers beat the Penguins 8-2 and then proceded to beat the Penguins winning virtually every fight. Jeff Carter even dropped the gloves and put a beating on Ryan Whitney. The sign held up to the glass right in front of the two said “OLDE TIME HOCKEY” and it could not have been more perfect. This was Flyers hockey. The witch hunt continues this season however as Pens’ coach Michel Therrien whined about the Flyers racking up a score (the Pens beat the Flyers by the same score on Oct. 28 last year) and defended the utter douche baggery of his team in the third. When it became way too late to come back the Pens decided to challenge the Flyers in a physical battle which was a big mistake. Despite the cries of Philly faithful Therrien would not put Sid the kid on the ice for the final six minutes of the game. It is assumed that he was concerned for the imminent decapitation of Crosby (whether it come from Martin Biron, Ben Eager, or any of the 18,000+ fans in attendance).

There is definitely bad blood here that spilled over from last season when the Flyers lost all eight meetings between the two teams, but this team is just purely annoying. Crosby alone will dive away from the direction of anything that moves on the ice but all the Penguins just seem to skate like they all have protective bubbles around them and cannot be touched. And when they do get hit they whine about it like their 20-year-old captain. Hockey is a contact sport however, so the presence of Georges Laraque and Gary Roberts is not enough to save the young bunch of baby faced skaters.

After years at the bottom of the division the Pittsburgh Penguins had a pretty good year last year….ONE YEAR. They won ONE playoff game and finished the year two points behind the division winning Devils. The fact that they think they are a legitimate team annoys me to no end. They play like they are owed some kind of respect despite being next to last in the division. Last year was an anomaly. The Flyers are never as bad as they were last year and the Pens are never as good. Not since Mario Lemieux retired (the first time).

The Flyers endured EIGHT losses last year. Already the Pens are crying after three. ESPN’s Mike and Mike usually do a segment called “Just Shut Up”, but they do it on Tuesdays, so Therrien will have to wait until next week to win an award this year. If nothing else, last night’s debacle should set the stage for a VERY energetic match up between the two teams on January 24.
