McNothing to Cheer About September 18, 2007

The look on Eagles fans’ faces told the story. The birds
had 340 yards of total offense, three more than their
opponents
but you wouldn’t know it. The demoralizing 20-12 loss the
Eagles suffered on Monday night dropped them to 0-2 on the
young season. Under normal circumstances no one in Eagles Nation
would complain about Brian Westbrook taking 17 carries for 96
yards, or Donovan McNabb passing for 240 yards, but this Monday
night something was missing - a touchdown. That’s all they
needed was one to make the game bearable to watch but they could
not provide the six points in a game where McNabb was anything but
accurate and receivers had a hard time finding open space.
I’m half surprised that there haven’t been calls from
Philly faithful for Kevin Kolb to start in place of the struggling
McNabb who (as ESPN has repeatedly pointed out) has lost six of his
last seven starts.
As reported in Birds Eye Blog, the timeout in the first half was called because the special teams didn’t have the correct number of players on the field. If that is the case you can charge the four point difference between the touchdown that was scored and the field goal that would have been kicked, to the Eagles special teams. Can we hope for a return of last year’s successful special teams coach John Harbaugh on the sidelines?
As Eagles fans across the Delaware Valley mourn the Eagles poor
start there were some positives. For one, everybody’s
favorite Chickie’s and Pete’s host Reno Mahe got a
standing ovation when he was able to successfully protect the ball
on
the Redskins’ first punt. Jason Avant had five catches for 55
yards highlighted by a 17 yard first down catch.
Next up for the birds is Detroit at home on Sunday at 1p.m.. It better be a long hard week at Eagles practice because if starting the 2007 campaign 0-2 wasn’t enough, the Lions and Jon Kitna have started the season 2-0.
