Flyers Open Training Camp; No One Cares But Me September 15, 2007

The Phillies have beaten the Mets for the 6th straight time the two teams have met. They are now one game back of the wild card on the arm of a strong seven-inning performance by Jamie Moyer (something we haven’t seen too often this year). The Eagles are two days away from taking all their frustration from week one out on the Washington Redskins on national television. Other fans dream of Donovan McNabb (or for some, Kevin Kolb) hoisting the Lombardi Trophy for all of Philadelphia to see, or Jimmy Rollins beating out that little runt Jose Reyes for the National League MVP. This particular September I dream of Tim Saunders repeating the late great voice of Gene Hart letting our fine city know “The Flyers have won…..the Stanley Cup!”

As your resident hardcore Flyers fan (I believe there are possibly dozens of us roaming the city) not only do I believe it is my dutybriere.jpg to be the first to get excited about the upcoming season, but I truly live for this. The orange and black revealed their new jerseys today which quite honestly made me vomit in my mouth a little at first glance. Sure, it looks good on Danny Briere. He’d look better than me wearing a Devils jersey, but the three-toned sleeves were enough to repulse me. Then, of course, it occurred to me that I am willing to don anything for my team and if it means a jersey that resembles a bad holiday sweater, than so be it. At least it will proudly say “BRIERE” on the back, our eight year investment.

Briere and Simon Gagne, by the way, won’t be the only big names in a Flyer uniform this season. Mark my words when I say that we will welcome Peter Forsberg back this season. I said it when he first left last year and it is becoming more likely as each valuable post-surgery second passes for “Peter the Great”. It may not be a warm welcome for Forsberg at first. He was a big disappointment last year scoring more trips to the doctor’s office than he did goals. But who can argue with (when healthy) the best player in the world joining an already impressive roster when the team is no longer built around him?

Having endured a decade of Philadelphia sports-dom, I want the Phillies to make the playoffs and the Eagles to win the Superbowl just as much as the next guy. At this moment however I see our best chance at having a parade coming from the Broad Street Bullies. So throughout all the EAGLES chants and MVP chants for Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins, I’ll be the guy you hear in the background yelling “LETS GO FLY-ERS!” Only when everyone assumes I’m screaming sarcastically because our city had false hopes once again, I’m serious. So join me Flyers fans in what will surely be a season of vengeance, just like their new slogan.
